This post explores the Winter Solstice of 2018 and describes the top ways to celebrate the shortest day of the year.
Winter Solstice 2018 | Top Ways to Celebrate
Here at the farm, a small gathering of friends and neighbors is scheduled for December 21st. The actual time that the sun will cross the Tropic of Capricorn is 5:23 pm on the 21st. That is the mark of the beginning of winter, the Winter Solstice, in the northern hemisphere. So, we’re planning a fire ceremony and potluck luncheon here at the farm. We’ll honor the passing darkness and welcome the return of the sun. To help me plan and include our wider community, I pulled together a list of ceremonies, rituals, crafts, and recipes to help recognize the Winter Solstice, also known as Yule.
I consider the list my top ways of celebrating the Winter Solstice.
The Winter Solstice is a magical time, but there’s no need for magic.
One of my goals when writing these posts is to remove the ‘Woo’ from the topic. You know, that ungrounded sense of otherworldliness that makes spiritual or nature-based topics seem cartoonish. When you seek a seasonal life, the recognition of the movement of the sun and stars is a practical act that keeps us connected to nature’s time and calendar. Music, symbols, and crafts naturally emerge from a centered place of knowing where we are in the seasonal cycle. Using them in ceremony or ritual creates a threshold for an authentic experience of the day, month, or season we are focused on that heals our exhaustion and remedies our sense of disconnect.
Winter Solstice 2018 | Celebrating with Food
Let’s begin our experience of the Winter Solstice through food! Of all the seasonal Holidays, those of December are most connected to food rituals. Baking cookies, using aromatic spices, cranberries, dried fruits, wild meats…these are the flavors of December and the Winter Solstice. Here are 3 food-themed activities to help you connect more fully with the Winter Solstice. Just click the hotlinks to start creating a tasty Solstice experience.
Celebrate the Winter Solstice with Handcrafted Holiday Cordials
Cordial making is my favorite food preservation technique. For December, I am sharing 2 recipes that capture the flavors of the season. Learn how to make Limoncello and celebrate all the citrus available this time of year. Make a fortified wine using mixed berries and flavored with the warm spices of the season and share with friends. Both recipes are easy, safe, and so very yummy. You may want to make double batches so you have some to enjoy after your guests leave. Click this link to learn how!
Celebrate the Winter Solstice by Handcrafting Seasonal Spice Blends
I have a simple recipe for Pumpkin Spice Blend and Apple Pie Spice Blend that can be added to oh so many more recipes than lattes and apple pie. From spicing up shortbread to flavoring a pork roast, these blends are full of December seasonal flavor! Simply sign into the Seasonal Living Resource Library and download the recipe card! Winter Solstice 2018 | Celebrating in the Home
While bonfires are a perfect way to celebrate the Winter Solstice, sometimes the weather isn’t so cooperative in December. This year, be sure to bring the season indoors with a few easy touches. Let’s brighten the home with handcrafted soy candles and have a nice seasonal soundtrack playing in the background. Finally, simmer a pleasant potpourri on your cooktop or on top of the wood stove to soften and warm the day.
Handcrafted Soy Candles to Brighten the Home this Dark Solstice Day
I love making my own soy candles for several reasons:
- They are high quality without the high price. I don’t have to worry about what I’m breathing because I know the ingredients in the candles. Breaking the bank is no worry either, as the supplies are affordable.
- I can recycle heatproof containers and keep to my zero waste goals.
- I can make extras and give them as gifts any time of year.

Music Makes the Moment
I love Spotify! Making playlists that capture the seasonal moods is one of my favorite hobbies. I enjoy cataloging albums associated with particular holidays and moods. I always have music playing while I am cooking, cleaning, writing, or simply sitting with a cuppa on the porch. Click the links below to listen to my December playlists as well as those made by others, and use them as background music during your Winter Solstice Celebrations.
A Simmer Potpourri for the Winter Solstice Home
Maybe you haven’t brought fresh greens into the home this December and the air in your home is stale. When the house is closed up tight, a bright and fragrant potpourri and be the perfect remedy to a sour home. Winter Solstice 2018 | Celebrating in the Garden
If the weather is even mildly accommodating, I will be in the gardens for some portion of the day during the Winter Solstice. I love climbing the back pasture to see the sunrise during the Winter Solstice. It rises behind a magnificent oak tree and outlines its craggy branches in yellow. I’ve often had friends over for a fire ceremony and lots of food. Often, these seasonal holidays will move me to create mandalas with this-and-that’s from nature.
I love to be alone and outdoors during the winter months.
This year, build a Yule Log and add it to your bonfire. Here are instructions for creating a Yule Log (Yule is an older name for the Winter Solstice).
Here’s my Yule Log from last year’s celebration ~
The Winter Solstice is one of the most profound shifts in nature and time during the course of the year. Make sure to take the time to notice it, whether alone or with friends. See it as a time of transition from one year to the next. Release, be grateful and tend to your own heart and body. Happy New Year!
