This post introduces you to my friends at the Super Duper Seed Swap. It will help you get ready for their 2019 event coming to Instagram the first week of January!
The Super Duper Seed Swap
The Super Duper Seed Swap is a grassroots seed sharing extravaganza organized through Instagram. The swap’s host is an urban homesteader named Forest Clinton. She lives in Connecticut and shares seeds with fellow gardeners across the United States twice a year. Read on to learn more about seed swapping, this specific swap, and how to participate.
At the end of the post, I’m even offering a free downloadable seed packet to help you organize and store the seeds you save!
What is a Seed Swap?
A seed swap is a community event that is designed to help ensure the free access of open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds. Seed swaps preserve the cuisine of certain peoples, promote organic gardening, or teach the skill of seed saving. These days, many seed swaps preserve the community-based feel of their origins but use social media to allow seeds to be shared across vast regions. That’s the method of Super Duper Seed Swap, an Instagram-based swap.
National Seed Swap Day is always the last Saturday in January. This year, that’s January 26, 2019. The Super Duper Seed Swap begins January 5, 2019. So, why not save both dates and find a way to participate in each. You’ll have a diversity of seeds for your gardens and plenty of sources for seeds for future swaps!
What is the Super Duper Seed Swap?
As mentioned earlier, the Super Duper Seed Swap is an Instagram-based seed swap organized by Forest Clinton in Connecticut. I know Forest as a co-worker at a wonderful company called My Pet Chicken. She’s that kinda gal that makes things happen, always with a smile. One day last October Forest asked me if I saved seeds. She was recruiting me for the upcoming swap. Awesomeness!
Since that time, Forest has also written the Introduction to my Kitchen Garden Planner and Journal. She’s been a true ally and mentor to me as I seek to deepen my garden skills and help others do the same.
My favorite thing about participating in the Super Duper Seed Swap was thinking I didn’t really know much about saving seeds, only to discover I had a treasure trove of seeds stored from the previous year’s gardens and my back pasture. I think this may be your favorite part, too.
That’s not to say that getting your package of seeds in the mail isn’t super duper fantastic, because it is. I mean LOOK!
Last October, I went to the Super Duper Seed Swap Instagram page on the designated day and left my contact information in a direct message for Forest so she knew I was participating. Then, about a week later, I received instructions on how to participate by direct message, like the image below.
Then, I inventoried my seeds and broke them down into 25 packets. The packets weren’t very fancy or elaborate. You know what, Forest told me what I sent was just fine. That was good because I’ll tell you, the other participats put so much love and creativity into their submissions that I am motivated to do more this January.
I am also going to help you out with this. I designed little seed packets for you to download and personalize. It will be fun and easy! You can personalize each packet and communicate effectively about its contents.
How do I Join?
Simply click this link to follow Super Duper Seed Swap on Instagram. Be sure to check their page the first week in January and follow the instructions. Then, simply keep your word and mail in your portion of seeds. Finally, sit with bated breath by the mailbox waiting for your return shipment of swapped seeds and enjoy every story, recipe, and seed in the package.
How do I save seeds?
I may be a Super Duper Seed Swapper, but I’m not that skilled at seed saving. I’ve taken classes and dabbled, but I’m still learning. To help us all learn and practice, here are some online resources from trusted seed savers. Enjoy!
And, here’s a nice video from Tim Farmer:
