Modern Irish Pub Songs
Welcome to my March seasonal sounds, a Spotify playlist of modern Irish pub songs!☘☘☘
March Madness isn’t just about Basketball. Walk into any pub mid-March and you’ll find yourself with people from all walks of life celebrating their Irish. Statistic Brain says that there are 36,900,000 people in the United States claiming Irish ancestry and that 46% of the current adult population plans on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Only 20% are planning on drinking as a part of their celebration, which by no means reflects my circle of friends!
There is nothing more disappointing than going to an Irish pub and listening to milquetoast rock. Irish music is wide-ranging. It is a soundscape encompassing the classics sung by Irish tenors, traditional reels and jigs, finally landing at the feet of Irish rockers electrifying the Celtic sound. That’s my favorite sound, and I especially want to hear it in March!
The list my best-of-the-best list of Modern Irish Pub songs for your March seasonal sounds is on Spotify. 17 songs for the 17th! Turn on the tunes and get ready to rock out your Irish this March!
Here are my 5 favorites from the list:
- The Buzzards of Bourbon Street, Gaelic Storm – toe-tapping Celtic Sound from a band that cherishes live performances and has been a hard-driving tour force for 20 years.
2. Galway Girl, Steve Earl – this song is from my favorite Steve Earl album, Transcendental Blues (2000). The original is on the Spotify Playlist, but this YouTube version is a live recording with 15,000 residents of Galway providing backup.
3.eThe Itchy, Scratchy, Prickly Thistle, The Rogues. This is the live version from America’s Celtic Rock Band. Bob and his friend and piper Bob Mitchell play a nice version of this at our farm gatherings. It’s a fun tune combining good drumming and rocking pipes!
4. Drunken Lullabies, Flogging Molly’s. Great band, timely lyrics, rockin’ tune.
Here’s the refrain:
Must it take a life for hateful eyes
To glisten once again
‘Cause we find ourselves in the same old mess
Singin’ drunken lullabies
5. Streams of Whiskey, The Pogues. Shane MacGowan is so smart and so fun. I learned he turned 60 this past Christmas Day and had quite the birthday celebration on January 15, 2018. I guess we’re all getting older, and better.
Now that I’ve warmed the pipes, here’s the entire list. Get ready to toe tap, smile, and enjoy the seasonal sounds of March in this Spotify playlist celebrating modern pub songs.
